EDF Launches Free Electricity Sundays to Ease Household Bills

EDF is rolling out its Sunday Saver challenge this spring, offering customers the chance to earn free electricity across four Sundays. This initiative allows households to significantly reduce their energy costs by simply adjusting their electricity usage patterns.

How the Sunday Saver Challenge Works

The Sunday Saver program enables eligible customers to earn free electricity on Sundays by shifting their electricity consumption away from peak hours during the week, specifically from 4pm to 7pm. The more electricity customers move from these peak times, the more free hours they can accumulate for the following Sunday.

Customers can earn between four and 16 hours of free electricity per week, with the challenge running throughout April. EDF is the only energy provider currently offering this unique opportunity for four consecutive Sundays, providing a practical way for families to save money and enjoy their weekends without worrying about high bills.

Significant Savings and Participation Details

Since its inception in 2024, the Sunday Saver challenge has helped participants earn over 20.5 million hours of free electricity, translating to approximately £6.6 million in bill savings. On average, Sunday Savers earn about 18 hours of free electricity each month.

The most dedicated customers who participated in all eight challenges throughout 2025 earned an average of 266 hours of free electricity, along with £96 in bill credits over the year. This demonstrates the substantial financial benefits available to those who consistently engage with the program.

Customers have until Sunday, April 5th at 11:59 PM to sign up for the April challenge, which begins on Monday, April 6th. The earned free electricity can be used on Sundays April 19th and 26th, as well as May 3rd and 10th, giving households multiple opportunities to benefit.

Executive Insight and Environmental Benefits

Joe Souto, Director of Retail at EDF, commented on the initiative, stating, "With the energy price cap decreasing in April, Sunday Saver continues to provide customers with a simple, practical method to cut costs and save even more when they need it most."

He added, "If customers commit to every Sunday Saver challenge and adjust their energy use, they could achieve an average of 266 hours of free electricity on Sundays and £96 on their annual energy bills. Households can monitor their usage through Energy Hub, identify savings opportunities, and reduce their carbon footprint simultaneously. It's a straightforward approach to alleviating bill pressures while supporting a more sustainable electricity grid."

This program not only offers financial relief but also encourages energy efficiency and grid stability, making it a win-win for consumers and the environment alike.
