A major UK energy supplier is set to offer households free electricity through the return of its popular Sunday Saver scheme, designed to encourage reduced energy consumption during peak periods.
How the Sunday Saver Scheme Works
EDF, one of Britain's leading energy firms, will launch the initiative on February 2, providing customers with opportunities to earn complimentary electricity on selected Sundays throughout February and March. The scheme specifically targets February 15, February 22, March 1, and March 8 as the designated free electricity days.
Earning Free Electricity Hours
Households can accumulate between four and sixteen hours of free electricity by consciously lowering their energy usage between 4pm and 7pm from Monday to Friday. The more electricity customers successfully shift away from these peak times, the greater their reward of free power the following Sunday.
Registration for the challenge opens on January 26 and remains available until 11.59pm on February 1, giving customers a limited window to opt into the energy-saving programme.
EDF's Commitment to Sustainable Energy
Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, emphasised the timing of the scheme's reintroduction: "January is a period when many individuals seek fresh approaches to economise following the festive season, making this an ideal moment to revive our Sunday Saver challenge."
He further highlighted the scheme's previous success, noting that over 210,000 customers have already benefited from free electricity through adjusted consumption habits, simultaneously reducing their carbon footprint and supporting a more sustainable electricity grid.
Eligibility and Participation Requirements
To qualify for the Sunday Saver scheme, participants must possess a functioning smart meter for their electricity supply and be enrolled in half-hourly meter readings. These technological requirements ensure accurate tracking of energy reduction during the designated peak hours.
Customers can monitor their progress through the Energy Hub accessible via MyAccount, which provides a personalised overview of household energy consumption patterns. This digital platform allows participants to track their savings and optimise their energy usage throughout the challenge period.
Broader Context and Industry Position
EDF, competing with other major suppliers including British Gas, OVO, EON Next, and Octopus, is actively promoting the transition toward what it terms "An Electric Britain" – a vision of a secure, affordable, low-carbon future for all citizens.
The company asserts its position as Britain's largest generator of zero-carbon electricity, with substantial weekly investments exceeding £100 million in the nation's electricity infrastructure. EDF supplies electricity to millions of customers nationwide while assisting both residential and commercial clients in transitioning to electric solutions for heating, transportation, and industrial processes.
Interested households can obtain comprehensive details about the Sunday Saver challenge through the EDF website and complete their registration via the MyAccount portal, taking advantage of this innovative approach to energy conservation and cost reduction.
