Major Energy Suppliers' Customers Face £24 Monthly Bill Increase

Households across the UK served by British Gas, EDF, EON, Ovo, and Octopus are bracing for a significant rise in their energy expenses. According to the latest projections from Cornwall Insight, energy bills are predicted to increase by £24 per month starting in July. This adjustment translates to an annual surge of £288 for typical dual fuel households, marking a substantial financial burden for consumers.

Price Cap Projections and Market Analysis

The anticipated price cap for July is now estimated at £1,929 for a standard dual fuel household, representing an 18% increase compared to April's cap of £1,641 per year. Craig Lowrey, principal consultant at Cornwall Insight, emphasized that while a July rise is nearly certain, the exact magnitude remains uncertain. He noted, "Summer typically sees the lowest energy demand, which may help mitigate the impact on household budgets. However, if wholesale prices continue to climb, the effects on the October cap could be more severe, potentially prompting discussions about government support for affected families."

Industry and Advocacy Responses

Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, expressed deep concern over the projected hike, labeling it a £288 'Trump Tax' linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East affecting oil and gas prices. He warned, "This increase poses a real threat to millions already struggling with energy debt, risking a crisis for vulnerable households. Ministers must utilize increased Windfall Tax revenues to provide targeted aid, especially for those off the gas grid, while accelerating efforts to address energy debt and reduce costs through efficiency measures and renewable energy adoption."

Francis further advocated for long-term solutions, stating, "To break this cycle of price volatility, we need enhanced energy efficiency programs, expanded rollout of homegrown renewables, and reforms to electricity pricing to ensure households benefit from affordable clean power."
