E.ON Next Urges Households to Make Simple Energy Tweaks for £90 Annual Savings
E.ON: Small Thermostat Tweak Saves £90 Annually

E.ON Next is urging customers across the UK to implement straightforward adjustments in their homes to achieve significant reductions in energy expenditure. The energy supplier highlights that a minor modification to heating settings can lead to substantial financial benefits for households.

Substantial Savings from a Simple Change

According to E.ON Next, turning down your thermostat by just one degree Celsius could save an average of approximately £90 per year for a typical home. This advice comes as the UK continues to experience cold temperatures, prompting the company to provide actionable guidance to help consumers manage and lower their energy costs effectively.

Expert Insights on Energy Management

Phil Gilbert, E.ON Next’s Director of Net Zero Delivery, has shared his team’s top recommendations for enhancing energy efficiency at home. Gilbert emphasised the importance of monitoring energy consumption closely to gain better control over usage patterns and associated bills.

Monitor Your Energy Use with a Smart Meter

Gilbert stated: "See exactly how much you’re using in real time with your in-home display and on our app and take control of your energy habits. This can help you to lower your energy use and bills. Plus, you’ll receive accurate, up-to-date bills that don’t rely on estimates."

Practical Adjustments for Immediate Impact

The guidance includes several easy-to-implement tips that can lead to noticeable savings without compromising comfort.

Optimise Thermostat Settings

Set your thermostat at the lowest temperature that still feels comfortable, ideally between 18 and 21°C. Reducing the setting by just one degree can cut energy bills by about 5% annually. For instance, lowering from 22°C to 21°C typically saves around £90 on average for a standard household.

Adjust Hot Water Temperature

For those with combi boilers, consider lowering the flow temperature from the default 65°C to 60°C. This adjustment still provides sufficient hot water for radiators and showers while reducing heating expenses.

Enhance Home Insulation

Installing reflector panels behind radiators helps bounce heat back into rooms, maintaining warmth without needing to increase thermostat settings. Additionally, adding draught proofing around doors, windows, letterboxes, and chimneys prevents heat loss during colder months.

Evaluating Appliance Efficiency

Older household appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, and dishwashers often consume more energy than modern, efficient models. Faults in these devices can further increase energy usage.

Gilbert noted: "If your appliances are broken or in poor condition, you could be eligible for a replacement through the E.ON Next Energy Fund – so it’s worth checking."

By adopting these practical measures, households can not only reduce their energy bills but also contribute to broader environmental goals through decreased energy consumption.
