UK Smart Meter Owners Can Claim Free Electricity This May Bank Holiday
Households across the UK equipped with smart meters have a unique opportunity to receive free electricity during the upcoming May bank holiday weekend. Energy comparison service Uswitch.com has launched a special initiative that will pay for eight hours of electricity usage, with a maximum reimbursement of £10 per household.
How the Free Electricity Offer Works
The promotion, dubbed "Power Hours," allows participants to select their preferred day from Saturday, May 2, Sunday, May 3, or Monday, May 4. To qualify, households must connect a compatible smart meter to the Uswitch mobile app and register for the Power Hours scheme by April 29. There is no restriction based on energy provider, making the offer accessible to a wide range of consumers.
Natalie Mathie, an energy expert at Uswitch.com, commented on the initiative, stating, "The cost of energy is on everybody’s minds at the moment, so we hope that as many homes as possible can enjoy our little gift of free electricity for the first May bank holiday weekend." She added, "Whether you’re tackling the spring clean, catching up on laundry, or cooking for friends and family - you can earn back your electricity spend on us."
Key Details and Participation Requirements
Participants will be reimbursed for electricity consumed between 8am and 4pm on their chosen day. Uswitch will calculate the earnings based on usage during these active hours, with payments available to claim by the end of May. The funds can then be withdrawn directly into the participant's bank account via the app.
Important notes for potential participants include:
- Spaces are limited to 25,000 for existing Uswitch customers.
- New customers can sign up without any cap on participation numbers.
- Registration must be completed by April 29 to secure a spot.
- Only households with compatible smart meters are eligible.
Mathie emphasized the urgency, advising, "Spaces are limited, so download the Uswitch app and sign up as soon as possible to make sure you don’t miss out on your free electricity." This initiative aims to provide financial relief and encourage energy-efficient practices during a period when many households are focused on reducing utility costs.
