Families across the UK are being urged to adopt a straightforward laundry routine that could slash their annual washing machine running costs by half. The advice comes during Big Energy Saving Week, a campaign led by the Energy Saving Trust in partnership with Citizens Advice.
The eco-cycle: Your key to lower bills
Experts are highlighting a powerful yet simple method to reduce household expenditure: using your washing machine's 'eco' setting. Running a standard clothes washing cycle can cost around £200 per year, according to data from Energy Local. However, the 'eco' cycle, despite taking longer, consumes significantly less energy.
The Energy Saving Trust explains that by actively lowering your energy consumption, you directly reduce the amount you pay on your bills. A second crucial tip is to opt for colder washes. Households are advised to use a 20°C or 30°C cycle instead of higher temperatures whenever possible.
Smart tariffs and time-of-use savings
Further potential savings lie in exploring innovative energy tariffs. The Trust points to 'smart time-of-use tariffs', a pricing model where electricity costs fluctuate based on the time of day. "Unlike traditional fixed-rate or standard rate tariffs, these tariffs consider the changes in energy demand throughout the day," a spokesperson stated.
This means running appliances like washing machines during off-peak hours could lead to substantial savings for consumers who are able to shift their usage.
Deadline looms for £300 Winter Fuel Payment
This energy-saving push coincides with a critical deadline from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The department is reminding eligible pensioners that they have until January 28, 2026 to report a missing Winter Fuel Payment.
This annual payment is designed to assist with heating costs during winter. To qualify, you must have reached State Pension age. It is important to note that if your taxable income exceeds £35,000, the payment may be recovered through the tax system.
While most recipients should have received their payment in November or December, those who haven't by the late January date should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
Adopting these energy-efficient habits, combined with ensuring you receive all entitled support, can provide a much-needed financial buffer for households managing the ongoing cost of living.
