Tumble Dryer Warning: UK Households Urged to Avoid Costly Energy Mistakes

UK households with tumble dryers are being strongly advised to avoid making what experts call the "biggest mistake" you can make with your appliance. This warning comes as a new energy price cap takes effect from April 1, offering a slight reduction in running costs.

Price Cap Reduction and Efficiency Tips

From April 1, Ofgem will implement a 6.6% decrease in its price cap, lowering it to 24.67p per kilowatt-hour. While this reduction makes operating tumble dryers slightly cheaper, energy efficiency remains crucial for maximizing savings.

Hotpoint, a leading appliance manufacturer, has highlighted that overloading your dryer is a major error. The company explains: "It puts stress on your machine, drastically reducing its efficiency and increasing its energy consumption. It’s also one of the main causes of your laundry still being wet after a cycle. Your clothes need ample room to move in the dryer for quick drying times. So, in this case, less is more!"

A practical guideline is to fill the drum just over halfway, allowing laundry to move freely and dry effectively.

Additional Energy-Saving Recommendations

Hotpoint further advises against leaving laundry in the dryer after the cycle ends. Functions like ‘crease care’ rotate the drum periodically post-cycle to prevent creasing, which is useful if you’re not available at the programme’s end, but they consume extra energy. Removing laundry promptly when dry and switching off the appliance can lead to significant energy savings.

Currys, another major retailer, provides additional guidance in its online resources: "Heat pump tumble dryers might cost more than vented and condenser dryers. But they’re the most energy efficient of the lot, so they’ll save you more money in the long run. They’re also gentler on your clothes as they produce less heat. This makes a great option for delicate fabrics. And as they run at a lower temperature, they won’t heat up the room they’re in as much. Ideal if you’re living in a small apartment — especially in the summer!"

By following these tips, households can optimize their tumble dryer use, reduce energy bills, and extend the lifespan of their appliances, making the most of the upcoming price cap changes.
