Powys Community Invited to Free Orchard Planting Workshop at Wern Farm
Residents of Powys and community orchard enthusiasts are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves and discover the secrets of successful orchard planting at a complimentary event scheduled for next week. The workshop, organized by Social Farms & Gardens, will be held at Wern Farm in Sarn, offering a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in cultivating fruit trees.
Building Resilient Food Systems Through Practical Skills
This pioneering initiative, managed by the Future Farms Partnership, aims to demonstrate that resilient food systems do more than just nourish communities—they also bolster local economies and enhance biodiversity. Recently spotlighted on the BBC's Escape to the Country, the project focuses on equipping participants with essential skills for growing fruit effectively.
Attendees will receive practical training in several key areas, including:
- Selecting appropriate fruit varieties suited to the Mid-Wales climate
- Techniques for staking and mulching to ensure tree survival
- Implementing soil amendments for optimal growth
The team at Wern Farm consists of passionate young growers dedicated to proving that small-scale, resilient agricultural systems can simultaneously support economic vitality and environmental health.
Expert Guidance and Farm Tour Included
Sarah Collick, a development worker with Social Farms & Gardens, emphasized the importance of proper care for fruit trees. "Fruit trees require a bit of care and attention to get them off to a good start—and many varieties are just not suited to our climate," she said. "We want people to leave with the confidence to successfully grow their own fruit trees at home or in their communities."
After the morning's planting activities, participants will enjoy a complimentary lunch featuring seasonal soup made from locally sourced ingredients. The afternoon will include a guided tour of the farm, complete with a discussion on future plans for the Forest Garden Farm, providing insights into sustainable agricultural practices.
