Neepsend Brewery Tour: Why Their Beers Are Always Changing

Established in 2015, Neepsend Brewery has been quietly brewing the kind of beer its team enjoys. Known for its Neepsend Blonde, this small but lean operation consistently changes its range and expands its crafting repertoire. Christopher Hallam visited to explore the brewery and speak with Head Brewer Harry Geeves.

A Small but Productive Team

"We’re a small team. There’s only two of us in the brewery full-time, a driver, and some office staff as well. So, we’re a small but productive team. Despite our size, we do produce a considerable amount of beer each year," says Harry Geeves, adjusting his spectacles and halting production to chat.

Based in the Neepsend area of Sheffield, the brewery uses a 10-barrel brewing system. Initially located near the Ball Street bridge over the River Don, which inspired its logo, Neepsend Brewery moved in 2020 to 92 Burton Road. This location is shared with other makers and independent businesses, benefiting from proximity to Factory Floor and Peddler.

An Efficient Brewing Space

Harry leads a tour of the brewery, which initially seems confined but reveals a capacious and efficient operation. The unassuming exterior belies a streamlined, factory-like layout where every tank, tool, and keg serves a purpose. Cleanliness is paramount, with everything shining brightly.

"The brewhouse section is where we process all the malted barley, hops, and raw ingredients. On a typical brew day, much of the initial process happens here," Harry explains. The other side features tanks for fermentation, maturation, and conditioning, with beers packaged into casks, kegs, and hand-labelled cans.

Award-Winning Quality and Variety

The brewery produces approximately 310 gallons per batch and has earned recognition, including the ‘Champion Beer of the Festival’ at the Brewers’ Selection Beer Awards 2025 for its Imperial Porter ‘Junda’. This success stems from a continuous desire to tweak ingredients and adjust recipes.

"One of our approaches is to produce a really large range of different styles, tastes, and strengths. People are always after variation and new things. We embrace that," Harry notes. He got into brewing through home-brewing with his father and joined Neepsend Brewery in 2021.

Recommendations and Where to Find It

For newcomers to pale ales, Harry recommends Alcis, describing it as crisp, light, fruity, and hoppy. Neepsend Brewery supplies beer to Sheffield alehouses like The Sheaf View, The Wellington, and The Blake Hotel. Visitors can also pop down to Burton Road to speak with brewers Harry Geeves or David Manna for recommendations or mini-kegs.

Neepsend Brewery is located at Unit 13, Kelham Arcade, 92 Burton Rd, Neepsend, Sheffield S3 8DA.
