UK Homeowners Embrace Quick DIY Projects for Spring Home Upkeep
New research from the waterproofing brand Thompsons has uncovered the most popular quick-win DIY jobs among UK homeowners, as the arrival of spring motivates many to focus on seasonal home and garden maintenance. With longer days and improving weather conditions, outdoor upkeep is becoming a top priority for households across the country.
Survey Highlights High DIY Engagement and Outdoor Focus
The survey found that an overwhelming 92% of respondents plan to undertake DIY projects this spring, with more than eight in 10 preferring to carry out tasks themselves rather than hiring professionals. Outdoor maintenance ranks highest on the list, with nearly half (45%) of homeowners identifying external spaces as their starting point for improvements.
Tidying the garden and cleaning patios or driveways emerged as the most common easy-win tasks, offering visible results with minimal effort. Interior projects also remain popular, including painting walls and installing shelves or picture frames, reflecting a broader trend toward practical, time-efficient home enhancements.
Expert Insights on Seasonal Challenges and Solutions
Jimmy Englezos, senior brand manager at Thompsons, commented on the findings, stating, "With the wet winter months having taken their toll, we are not surprised that garden maintenance is high up on people's priority lists, especially now that we are seeing the return of bluer skies and warmer days." He added that high winds and heavy rain can cause havoc to gardens and outdoor spaces, leading to unsightly stains, dirt, and algae buildup on hard-landscaping surfaces like patios.
The research also highlights that preparation is key for DIY enthusiasts, with over two-thirds of respondents expecting to purchase materials or tools to complete their projects. When it comes to cleaning patios and driveways, homeowners use a range of approaches, from manual scrubbing to pressure washers, but many are considering longer-term maintenance solutions.
Long-Term Maintenance and Protective Treatments
Specialist cleaning products designed for patios and block paving can help remove dirt, grime, and common surface marks effectively. According to Thompsons experts, these cleaners can also limit the return of issues such as algae growth and oil staining over time, making ongoing maintenance easier for homeowners.
Additional treatments, like waterproofing sealants, provide a protective layer over surfaces to reduce the penetration of dirt, stains, algae, and moss, particularly during wetter months. These solutions may help protect against longer-term wear and damage, ensuring outdoor areas remain clean and functional throughout the year.
Trend Toward Achievable Home Improvements
The data reflects a growing trend toward manageable home improvements that deliver visible results without requiring extensive renovations. As spring progresses and the first bank holiday weekend approaches, many households are using the opportunity to refresh their homes and outdoor areas through straightforward DIY activities, enhancing both appearance and functionality.
This focus on quick-win tasks allows homeowners to tackle seasonal upkeep efficiently, boosting curb appeal and creating more enjoyable living spaces as warmer weather sets in.
