Dudley MP Presses for North Borough Waste Centre as Council Confirms Review

Dudley's Member of Parliament has entered the ongoing debate regarding the lack of waste disposal provision in the northern part of the borough. Sonia Kumar MP has formally written to the council leader, Councillor Patrick Harley, emphasising that waste disposal services are essential and 'not a luxury' for local residents.

Current Provision and Immediate Concerns

The borough currently operates just one household waste recycling centre, located on Birmingham Street in Stourbridge. This centralised facility leaves northern residents facing significant challenges when disposing of their household waste.

In her correspondence, Ms Kumar stated: 'While I understand that the council has proposed plans for a new centralised household waste recycling centre, these proposals do not address the immediate challenges facing residents today.'

The Labour MP highlighted previous successful temporary measures, noting: 'Temporary or 'pop-up' waste facilities previously operated successfully in the north of the borough and were both well used and welcomed by local residents.'

Council's Strategic Review and Budget Commitments

Ms Kumar's intervention comes as the Conservative-run council has already confirmed a strategic review of waste disposal provision. At a recent meeting of the authority's Communities and Growth Scrutiny Committee, Councillor Damian Corfield, Dudley's cabinet member for neighbourhoods, addressed questions about northern borough tips.

Cllr Corfield revealed: 'We have got a strategic review on HWRC provision and within the budget there is funding to look at provision for the north of Dudley. There is funding in the budget to provide HWRC provision of some sort, we are not sure exactly what that is yet but the importance of having provision in the north is key and we have factored that in.'

Political Pressure and Practical Solutions

The MP's letter specifically calls for two key actions:

  • The reinstatement of regular and accessible waste facilities in the northern part of the borough
  • The implementation of pop-up tips as an interim measure while permanent solutions are developed

While Councillor Corfield could not provide a specific date for any new HWRC provision in the north of Dudley, he expressed hope that residents would see progress 'within the financial year'. This timeline suggests that the MP's plea for immediate action may find some resolution in the council's upcoming budget allocations.

Broader Context of Waste Management

The debate over waste disposal facilities in Dudley reflects wider concerns about equitable service provision across different areas of the borough. With only one permanent recycling centre currently serving the entire population, pressure has been mounting on council officials to address geographical disparities in access to essential services.

The strategic review announced by cabinet members represents a significant step toward addressing these concerns, though the exact nature of future provision remains to be determined through the review process and subsequent budget decisions.
