Timmy Time's Hedgehog Walk: Aardman's Spring Wildlife Challenge for Families
Aardman's Hedgehog Walk: Spring Wildlife Challenge for Families

This spring, families across the United Kingdom are invited to join a delightful wildlife conservation effort through The Hedgehog Walk, a family-friendly fundraising challenge created in partnership with the beloved characters from Aardman Animations' Timmy Time series. The initiative aims to create safer habitats for hedgehogs, whose numbers have seen a dramatic decline in recent years.

A Fun-Filled Challenge for All Ages

The annual event, scheduled to run from March 30 to April 30, encourages participants of all ages to walk, wheel, crawl, or even roller skate a distance of 3 kilometres. This distance is symbolic, representing the same nightly journey a hedgehog typically undertakes in search of food and shelter. Led by Timmy, the littlest lamb from Shaun the Sheep's flock, and his prickly friend Apricot, the challenge is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Addressing a Critical Wildlife Decline

Hedgehog populations in the UK have plummeted by 30 per cent over the past decade, with current estimates suggesting fewer than one million remain. The timing of The Hedgehog Walk coincides with the period when these creatures emerge from hibernation, making it an ideal opportunity to raise awareness and funds for their conservation. By participating, families can contribute directly to efforts that support hedgehog habitats and broader wildlife protection.

Voices from the Conservation Frontline

Alex Reynolds, Education Officer at Northumberland Wildlife Trust, emphasises the importance of community involvement: "Get your hoglets out walking for wildlife this spring with the Hedgehog Walk. Whether you're toddling through the park with Timmy, marching through the woods with Apricot, or counting laps in the playground with Bumpy the little green caterpillar, every step helps build a better future for wildlife."

Rachael Peacock, Head of Brand Marketing at Aardman, adds: "We're delighted to return with The Wildlife Trusts for another Hedgehog Walk, with Timmy and Apricot leading the way once more. It's a brilliant opportunity for families to enjoy the outdoors together, learn about the wildlife around them, and take part in something that makes a real difference."

Engaging Resources for Participants

Upon registration, participants receive a downloadable activity pack filled with engaging materials to enhance their experience. This pack includes:

  • Colourful posters to promote the event
  • Interactive activity sheets for children
  • Informative fact sheets about hedgehogs and local wildlife
  • Tracking timelines to help mark the 3km milestone

The resources also provide valuable information on how to care for the natural world and effectively fundraise for regional wildlife conservation efforts.

Making Every Step Count

The Hedgehog Walk not only raises vital funds but also highlights practical ways everyone can contribute to wildlife preservation. From creating hedgehog-friendly gardens to supporting local conservation projects, the challenge empowers participants to take actionable steps towards protecting these beloved creatures. As families embark on their 3km journeys this spring, they join a nationwide movement dedicated to ensuring hedgehogs and other wildlife can thrive for generations to come.
