Stourbridge Cat Reunited with Owner After 12 Years Living Outdoors Nearby
In an extraordinary tale of resilience and reunion, a cherished pet cat has been returned to his owner after vanishing twelve years ago. The black feline, named Sam, was discovered living just a few streets away from his original home in Stourbridge, where he had been surviving outdoors for over a decade.
A Heartbreaking Disappearance and Astonishing Discovery
Owner Angela Furnival, aged 63, was left devastated when her beloved cat Sam disappeared in May 2014 from her former residence in Stourbridge, Worcestershire. Despite extensive searches, including distributing leaflets and checking local areas, Sam never returned, and Angela eventually moved to Kidderminster in 2016, losing hope of ever seeing him again.
However, in a stunning turn of events, Sam was located last week by concerned members of the public near a block of flats, approximately 800 yards from where he initially vanished. A couple who had recently moved into the area noticed the cat looking unwell and contacted the rescue charity Paws Together Enville.
The Emotional Reunion and Remarkable Survival
The charity promptly took Sam to Kinver Edge Vets in Stourbridge, where veterinary staff scanned him and found a microchip linking him to Angela. On March 20, Angela received a call from the vets, leaving her in disbelief. She rushed to the surgery the following day, where Sam immediately bounded over, purring, as if no time had passed.
Angela described the moment as "just wonderful," adding, "I assumed that Sam wouldn't return. It was heart-breaking when he disappeared, but now it's like he'd never been away." Remarkably, Sam had endured numerous harsh winters outdoors, subsisting on scraps given by neighbours, yet required only minor treatment for an ear infection and a thyroid condition.
The Importance of Microchipping and Community Efforts
Fiona Oldfield, 44, founding trustee of Paws Together Enville, expressed astonishment at the reunion, stating they were "gobsmacked" to learn Sam's owner had been searching for him all these years. Angela emphasised the critical role of microchipping in such cases, urging pet owners to keep their information updated to facilitate reunions.
Sam, now 15 years old, has settled back into family life with Angela, her dog, and her four delighted grandchildren. Angela plans to keep him indoors to ensure his safety and manage his health. Reflecting on the ordeal, she noted, "It just goes to show how important it is to get your animals microchipped. Not only that, but to also keep your information up to date, too. It could make a massive difference."
This heartwarming story highlights the resilience of animals and the power of community vigilance in bringing lost pets home, even after many years.
