The RSPCA has launched a public appeal for information following the distressing discovery of a deceased puppy inside a sealed cardboard box at a Birmingham park. The grim find was made by a member of the public at Fairfax Park in West Heath, specifically on the green area adjacent to Fairfax Road and Turves Green Road.
Disturbing Discovery in West Heath
A passerby made the shocking discovery on December 15th, finding a taped-up cardboard box containing the lifeless body of a young dog. The box itself had the word 'dead' scratched into its surface, adding to the disturbing nature of the incident. The individual who found the box took both the container and the puppy's body to a local veterinary practice for examination.
Severe Injuries and Suspicious Circumstances
RSPCA animal rescue officer Meg Cross provided details about the puppy's condition, stating that the animal showed signs of significant trauma before its death. The six-month-old puppy, believed to be a German Shepherd/Malinois cross, had suffered substantial head trauma, a wound on its head and neck area, and a broken jaw.
Additional concerning details emerged from the veterinary examination. The puppy was not microchipped, had blood on its body and in its mouth, appeared bloated, and was potentially underweight. The box containing the body was described as fairly dry, while the dog itself was wet, and the delivery address on the packaging had been scratched off.
RSPCA Investigation Underway
"This must have been extremely distressing and upsetting for the person who found this," said Ms Cross, expressing gratitude to both the finder and the veterinary staff who assisted. "We have tried a number of avenues to find out who is responsible and are now appealing for anyone with any first-hand information to give us a call."
The RSPCA emphasized that the nature of the injuries raises suspicions about what happened to the puppy. Despite investigations since the December discovery, authorities have not yet identified those responsible for this act of apparent animal cruelty.
How to Help the Investigation
The animal welfare charity is urging anyone with direct knowledge of this incident to come forward immediately. Individuals with relevant information should contact the RSPCA Inspectorate Appeal line on 0300 123 8018, quoting reference number 01698039.
"We don't know what happened here, but the injuries are suspicious," Ms Cross reiterated, highlighting the importance of community assistance in resolving this case. The RSPCA continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the puppy's death and its subsequent disposal in the Birmingham park.
