UK Mini-Heatwave Ends Thursday with Rain and Cooler Air

Met Office Confirms End of UK Mini-Heatwave This Thursday

The Met Office has officially announced the precise date when the current UK mini-heatwave will conclude, with rain and significantly cooler conditions set to return. This forecast comes as a welcome update for many residents who have been enjoying unseasonably warm weather.

Peak Temperatures on Wednesday Before the Change

On Wednesday, April 8, the Met Office predicts highs of 26°C across parts of the UK, providing a major boost for people desperate for sunshine after a prolonged period of cooler weather. This brief spell of warmth has been widely appreciated, offering a taste of spring conditions.

Transition Begins on Thursday with Cooler Air

However, from Thursday, April 9, the weather pattern will begin to shift dramatically. The Met Office explains that while East Anglia and the southeast may still experience warm temperatures, Thursday marks a transition period as cooler air moves in from the northwest.

Showers will become more widespread, and winds will strengthen, particularly later in the day. Temperatures are expected to fall markedly compared to Wednesday, with Thursday night feeling notably colder than recent nights. There is even a risk of frost in some areas, highlighting the abrupt change.

Unsettled Weekend Ahead with Potential Low Pressure

The forecast indicates that from Friday and into the weekend, the weather will become increasingly unsettled, with blustery conditions developing. Temperatures will return closer to seasonal averages, and many regions will see a mixture of sunshine and showers.

The Met Office is also monitoring the potential for a deep area of low pressure to pass close to northwestern parts of the UK late Friday into Saturday, which could bring more significant rainfall and windy conditions.

BBC Weather Supports Met Office Predictions

BBC weatherman Darren Bett corroborates the Met Office's outlook, stating that the weather pattern will change significantly on Thursday. He notes that a band of rain will push southeastwards across the whole country, followed by sunshine and showers, accompanied by a northwesterly wind.

This change in wind direction will bring in much cooler air, causing temperatures to drop noticeably to around 10 to 14°C (50-57°F) across most areas. However, ahead of the rain, temperatures in East Anglia and southeast England could still reach 20°C (68°F).

Detailed Weekend Forecast from the BBC

The BBC provides further details for the upcoming weekend:

  • Friday: Eastern and southern areas are expected to be mostly dry with sunny spells. Elsewhere, conditions will turn windy and cloudy with rain and showers.
  • Saturday: A band of cloud and light rain will sit across northern and central areas initially. Rain will move eastwards and turn heavier later on, while western regions become drier and sunnier.
  • Sunday: A few scattered showers are forecast, with temperatures remaining less warm overall.

Residents are advised to prepare for this shift in weather, ensuring they have appropriate clothing and plans for the cooler and wetter conditions ahead.
