The RSPCA has launched an urgent public appeal for information after a severely underweight bulldog was unexpectedly handed to a stranger outside a supermarket in Dudley.
Distressing Discovery on Dudley High Street
The incident occurred on Monday, January 19, when a member of the public was approached by a white male, approximately six feet tall, who handed over the female bulldog on Dudley High Street, directly outside the Asda supermarket. The concerned individual immediately recognised the animal was in poor condition and took decisive action.
Zina's Critical Health Condition
The bulldog, now nicknamed Zina, is believed to be around two years old and was described by rescuers as very underweight and suffering from multiple health issues. She was rushed to a local veterinary practice where she began receiving urgent medical treatment for her conditions.
Animal Rescue Officer George Mackie stated: "Zina was found in really bad condition, very underweight and with a number of additional health issues. We are so grateful to the person who took her to the vets so that she is now able to receive the care she so desperately needs."
Investigation into Ownership and Microchip
During veterinary examination, it was discovered that Zina has an unregistered microchip, complicating efforts to trace her previous owner. She is currently under the care of the local dog warden while the RSPCA investigates the circumstances that led to her being in such a poor state of health.
The RSPCA spokesperson emphasised the wider context, noting: "Reports of animal abandonment made to the RSPCA have reached their highest point in at least six years. In December alone, there were 1,919 reports of animals being abandoned."
National Surge in Animal Abandonment
This distressing case coincides with the charity's 'Big Give Back to Animals' campaign, which highlights rising levels of animal abandonment across the country. The surge in incidents has prompted an urgent appeal for public support to help rescuers cope with increasing demand.
How to Help the Investigation
Officer Mackie is keen to gather any information regarding Zina's previous ownership or how she came to be in such a neglected state. The RSPCA is urging anyone with firsthand information to contact their Inspectorate appeal line on 0300 123 8018, quoting incident number 01719004.
The charity continues to care for Zina as they work to uncover the full story behind her abandonment on a busy Dudley street.
