BBC TV Licence Cut from £180 to £90 for Blind Households: Rule Revealed
BBC TV Licence Cut to £90 for Blind Households

The cost of a BBC TV licence can be halved from £180 to £90 for blind or severely sight-impaired individuals, a discount that many households have only recently discovered. The 50% reduction applies when the licence is held in the name of the eligible person, according to guidance from Age UK.

How the Discount Works

A standard TV licence costs £180 per year. However, those who are blind or have severe sight impairment can claim a 50% discount, bringing the fee down to £90. Age UK advises: "If you're blind or you have a severe sight impairment you can claim a 50% discount on your licence. If you live with anyone else, the licence needs to be in your name in order for your household to get the discount."

Reddit Users Share Discovery

The discount became a talking point on Reddit, where one user posted: "TIL [today I learned] It is the Law to have a TV License to watch TV in the UK. If you are blind - you can get a TV license for 50% off." The post sparked discussion about TV licensing systems in different countries. One commenter noted: "TV licenses are not a rare thing, they exist in a lot of countries to fund public broadcasting. Some countries that previously had a TV license have adjusted it to be part of general taxation."

International Perspectives

A user from Ireland highlighted the value of public broadcasting: "We pay a licence in Ireland, and in addition to the public service TV we get something way more valuable - a well-funded but neutral news source." Another from Scandinavia explained: "In Norway they baked it into the income tax. Now the whining has stopped because people don't notice it when it's spread out so much."

Other Discounts and Exemptions

In addition to the blind discount, households in care homes or sheltered housing may qualify for an Accommodation for Residential Care (ARC) licence, costing just £7.50. Those aged 75 or over who receive Pension Credit can claim a free TV licence. These concessions aim to reduce the financial burden on vulnerable groups.
