Jon Snow, the former Channel 4 News presenter, has opened up about his Alzheimer's diagnosis in a new documentary, revealing the emotional toll of the disease. In the film, titled Jon Snow: A Last Big Story, the 78-year-old journalist struggles to remember names and fails a memory test, highlighting the challenges he faces.
Memory Test Failure
During a poignant scene, Snow attempts a memory test with a doctor. He is asked to recall three words but cannot bring any of them to mind moments later. He also does not know what day or month it is. His wife, Dr Precious Lunga, a 51-year-old epidemiologist and entrepreneur, tells the doctor that she has noticed a recent change in Snow's health. The tests reveal that his scores have dropped from 29% out of 30 to 21%.
Stigma and Prejudice
Snow speaks candidly about the stigma surrounding Alzheimer's, saying: "At the beginning, I wanted to hide it, there's so much prejudice. Any sort of hint of mental decay, you're sort of dead." He adds: "There are moments when it pops up but it's not an all day, every day condition, and that's what I cling onto. I've witnessed a great deal, I hope I've learned something – but I've still got a huge amount to learn. We all have. There's still more to do."
Career Reflections
In another emotional scene, Snow reveals that he does not believe anyone at Channel 4 would remember what he did during his tenure, which spanned from 1989 to 2021. The documentary explores his career and current life, as well as his diagnosis in 2023.
Understanding Alzheimer's
Alzheimer's is a progressive, irreversible brain disorder that slowly destroys memory, thinking skills, and the ability to carry out daily tasks. Symptoms progress slowly over several years, with the rate varying for each individual. According to the NHS, other conditions such as infections, stroke, and delirium can worsen symptoms. Early signs include forgetting recent conversations, misplacing items, and trouble finding the right word. Middle-stage symptoms include confusion, repetitive behavior, and mood changes. Later stages may involve aggression, difficulty eating, and loss of speech.
Snow has received an outpouring of support since revealing his diagnosis. The documentary, Jon Snow: A Last Big Story, aired on Channel 4 on Saturday, June 20, in association with the Alzheimer's Society.
