A Stevenage care home was filled with immense joy and heartfelt celebration as resident Doris Roberts marked an incredible milestone – her 104th birthday. Born on January 22, 1922, Doris has lived a truly remarkable life that spans over a century of British history and personal achievement.
A Life of Service and Creativity
Before retiring, Doris worked at the Bowater factory and later at British Aerospace (BAE), contributing to Britain's industrial and aerospace sectors during pivotal times. She is a proud mother to her son Malcolm and daughter Beverly, a devoted grandmother to six grandchildren, and a great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren, creating a lasting family legacy.
Doris also boasts a rich creative background, having been a talented singer who entertained troops during her time with the army and performed in pubs and clubs across the region. Now a resident at Woodlands View care home, she is well-known for her warm personality and active involvement in daily activities, bringing light and laughter to all around her.
A Celebration Fit for a Centenarian
To mark this special occasion, friends, family, and colleagues came together for a memorable celebration at the care home. The Mayor of Stevenage, Councillor Nazim Chowdhury, made a special visit to personally wish Doris a happy birthday and listen to stories about her extraordinary life, highlighting the community's respect for its eldest members.
The home’s chef and kitchen team created a delicious spread for the event, including a beautiful chocolate birthday cake, cupcakes, and a finger buffet featuring freshly made sausage rolls, samosas, and sandwiches. In a delightful twist, ITV’s This Morning show gave Doris an on-air birthday shout-out, adding a national touch to the local festivities.
Heartfelt Tributes from Care Home Staff
“Doris is a much-loved member of our Woodlands View family, and celebrating her 104th birthday was a real privilege for us all,” said the home's manager, Elena Chelea. “She is full of warmth, kindness and wonderful stories, and she brightens everyone’s day.
