A major search and rescue operation is continuing in East Yorkshire after a man died following an incident in the sea at Withernsea.

Emergency Services Respond to Distress Call

Emergency services were called to the Central Promenade in Withernsea at 3.15pm on Friday, 2 January 2026, following reports of a number of people in difficulty in the water. HM Coastguard, Humberside Police, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, and Humberside Fire & Rescue all responded to the scene.

The coastguard initially stated it was searching for two people. During the initial phase of the operation, crews recovered an unconscious man from the water.

Tragic Outcome Despite Rescue Efforts

Despite the best efforts of paramedics and other emergency personnel, the 67-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene on Saturday afternoon. Humberside Police have confirmed that the circumstances surrounding his death are not thought to be suspicious.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said: "We can confirm a 67-year-old man died a short time later at the scene. Searches are still ongoing."

Ongoing Search and Public Appeal

The large-scale search operation involving multiple agencies remains active. Authorities have warned local residents that they will see an increased police presence in and around the Withernsea area as the work continues.

Police have issued a direct appeal to the public, asking people to avoid the Central Promenade area to allow emergency services to work efficiently and safely. The focus remains on the ongoing search effort coordinated by the coastguard and its partner services.
