A major industrial fire, declared a 'major toxic incident', is raging at a factory in Wolverhampton, prompting a massive emergency response and urgent safety warnings for local residents.
Scale of the Emergency Response
The fire broke out at a large factory on Sunbeam Street, Blakenhall, shortly after 7:30 am on Wednesday, 14 January 2026. West Midlands Fire Service launched a huge operation, initially deploying more than 100 firefighters, 21 fire engines, and three hydraulic aerial platforms. Within an hour, resources were doubled in a bid to control the intense flames, which were confirmed to be spreading to neighbouring industrial units.
Public Health Warnings and Impact
Authorities have warned residents to stay indoors with doors and windows closed due to thick, toxic smoke billowing from the site. Ash has been reported falling on cars and homes in the area. Locals reported a strong 'plastic-burning smell' from as early as 8 am, with one resident stating the smoke caused a sore throat. Social media images showed smoke filling the sky, with flames 'clearly visible' from a distance. A reporter at the scene also reported hearing large, 'explosion-type' sounds.
Disruption and Safety Measures
The fire service has established an evacuation point on Bromley Street and advised people to avoid the area near St Luke's Church. St Lukes Primary School has been closed as a precaution. While good progress is being made and no injuries have been reported, the fire service expects the blaze to cause 'significant disruption' until at least Thursday morning as crews continue to damp down hotspots across the extensive factory site.
