Universal Credit claimants could face fines after losing access to free prescriptions and dental care, as confusion over rule changes leads to penalties. Money expert Martin Lewis has warned that many people are unaware of the new, lower income thresholds.
Key Changes for Tax Credit Migrants
Households moving from Tax Credits to Universal Credit may no longer qualify for free NHS prescriptions and dental treatment. Under Tax Credits, eligibility extended to those earning up to roughly £14,520 a year after tax. For Universal Credit, the threshold drops to around £5,220 or £11,220, depending on circumstances.
Martin Lewis Issues Warning
Speaking on his ITV show, Martin Lewis said: "If you move from Tax Credits to Universal Credit, do not assume you get free prescriptions in England, and dental. The Universal Credit income threshold for these is lower than under Tax Credits." He highlighted cases where claimants ticked the wrong box at the dentist or pharmacy, leading to fines of up to £100.
Lewis urged people to check their eligibility rather than assume. The welfare overhaul is phasing out older benefits, moving most claimants onto Universal Credit. This has caught many off guard, resulting in a surge in fines for those unaware of the changes.
