A trainee hospital worker has been warned he faces a significant prison term after a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting two patients while they underwent medical scans.
The Assaults in a Hospital Setting
Ieuan Crump, a 27-year-old from Gilfach, Caerphilly, was working as a trainee health worker at The Grange Hospital in Cwmbran, Wales, in August 2021 when he committed the offences. The court heard that Crump assaulted two different women on separate occasions while performing bladder scans, a standard medical procedure.
During the trial at Cardiff Crown Court, the jury was presented with disturbing evidence. One victim testified that Crump sexually assaulted her with his finger while a female colleague was present in the room attempting to insert a catheter. Shockingly, Crump later returned to the room alone, claiming he needed to check for swelling, and repeated the assault.
Targeting the Vulnerable
A second victim described how Crump touched her genitals during a bladder scan and inquired if they were sore, also moving her legs during the procedure. The prosecution argued that Crump had "targeted two vulnerable women" and had deliberately chosen not to wear gloves during the examinations, a claim he disputed by insisting he always wore the required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Crump had denied all charges, and his defence barrister, Marian Lewis, described him as a "man of impeccable character". However, after less than three hours of deliberation on Wednesday, November 19, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts.
Inevitable Prison Sentence
In total, Ieuan Crump was found guilty of nine charges of sexual assault, which included three counts of assault by penetration. Judge Vanessa Francis, addressing Crump directly after the verdicts, stated unequivocally, "Inevitably, I am going to be giving you a prison sentence of some length."
Although granted bail until his sentencing hearing on December 18, Crump was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register on an interim basis. It was also revealed that he had faced a previous trial for the same offences in 2024, which collapsed after more than two weeks.
