Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport has launched a vital new initiative to support patients who are homeless or at risk of homelessness during the challenging winter months. The scheme is a collaboration between Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and key local partners.
A Collaborative Effort to Tackle Health and Homelessness
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, which operates the hospital, is working closely with Stockport Homes Group (SHG), The Wellspring, and Age UK Stockport. The partnership recognises the complex, two-way relationship between poor health and homelessness, where each can be both a cause and a consequence of the other.
To address this cycle directly, Stockport Homes Group has introduced a dedicated Hospital Homeless Advocate role based at the Stepping Hill Hospital site. This specialist provides crucial, on-the-ground support and has been training hospital staff to identify and refer patients who need help.
Practical Support for Vulnerable Patients
The process is designed to be swift and effective. Once a consenting patient is referred, they can quickly access support from SHG and its partner services. This approach aims to improve individual welfare and patient care outcomes, while also aiding patient flow within the busy hospital.
For those who remain without accommodation, the hospital team can also provide immediate practical aid. The supplies available include:
- Hats and gloves
- Thermal flasks and backpacks
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
- Sanitary items
- Food
This comprehensive scheme, based at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, Greater Manchester, represents a proactive step in supporting some of the community's most vulnerable individuals during the coldest season, aiming to break the damaging link between health crises and housing insecurity.
