Lewis Capaldi Opens Up on Mental Health Battle in Emotional Return
Lewis Capaldi on Mental Health and New Music

Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi has spoken candidly about his difficult mental health journey, describing a period that represented the lowest he has ever felt in his life. The 29-year-old artist made these poignant revelations as he returns to the spotlight, including a performance on the Strictly Come Dancing Blackpool special on Sunday, 23 November.

A Hiatus for Health and a Triumphant Return

Capaldi's openness comes after he took a break from touring following his performance at the Glastonbury Festival in 2023. During that now-famous set, his performance was interrupted by his Tourette's syndrome symptoms, leading him to step back from the stage to prioritise his wellbeing. He has been transparent about his struggles with anxiety, panic attacks, and imposter syndrome.

Since 2023, the singer has been attending therapy, a step that has been part of his journey back to music. His comeback is marked by the release of his new 'Survive' EP and a powerful single titled 'The Day That I Die'. The song's lyrics, which Capaldi describes as heartbreaking, directly reflect his darkest moments.

Finding Strength in Music and Fan Support

In a heartfelt post to his fans on Instagram, Lewis Capaldi shared his feelings about releasing such a personal track. He wrote, "This is a tune I wrote about the lowest I've felt in my life", admitting it felt strange to share it. However, he also expressed that he is "the proudest I've ever been about a song with this one."

He emphasised how far he has come, stating, "It's been an absolute pleasure being back releasing music and playing shows the last six months and I'm honestly so pleased to say I feel so far removed from the place I was when I wrote this song." He ended his message with optimism, looking forward to more music next year.

The emotional weight of his new single is clear in its lyrics, which imagine his own passing and include lines asking to tell his mother he was smiling and apologising to friends for not staying in touch more.

Closing the Circle at Glastonbury

Capaldi's journey came full circle earlier this year with a surprise return to Glastonbury in 2025. He performed an unannounced 35-minute set on the Pyramid Stage, an event he described as "finish[ing] what I couldn't finish the first time round."

Visibly moved while addressing the crowd at Worthy Farm, he said, "It's so good to be back. I'm not going to say much up here today, because if I do, I think I will probably start crying. But it's just amazing to be here with you all." This triumphant moment signalled not just a professional return, but a significant personal victory for the singer.
