Drone Footage Reveals Birmingham Wheels Park Site for New BCFC Stadium
Drone Footage Shows BCFC Stadium Site Transformation

Stunning drone footage has revealed the current state of the Birmingham Wheels Park site, which is set to be transformed into a future landmark. With its desolate racing tracks, heaps of tyres and decaying buildings, the 48-acre site in the east of the city is not much to look at right now. However, in just a few years, it could become a globally recognised stadium and landmark.

Ambitious Plans for The Powerhouse

Birmingham City FC's ambitious plans for The Powerhouse, a 62,000-seater colosseum with several eye-catching chimneys, are at the heart of the wider Sports Quarter vision. The club's project includes new transport links, a training centre, a women's stadium, an arena and mixed-use development with housing. There is huge optimism that the Sports Quarter plans could provide a massive boost for Birmingham's economy and create a sporting and cultural destination that attracts visitors from across the world.

Drone Footage Highlights Scale and Location

The drone footage shows the scale of the Wheels Park site as well as its prominent location, with the towers of Birmingham's skyline visible in the background. During a recent visit to the land, figures from the combined authority and Knighthead excitedly discussed where different elements of the stadium would be. West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker was also at the site to talk about the stadium and the launch of a Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC), which aims to de-risk major projects.

Mayoral Development Corporation Launch

Mayor Parker described the MDC as Britain's biggest and most powerful, stating it would significantly speed up the £11 billion regeneration of East Birmingham. The MDC initiative combines a range of powers including land acquisition, planning, business tax incentives and infrastructure funding. According to the Mayor, this will cut through red tape, build investor confidence and accelerate investment into the area. This would benefit enormous projects such as the Sports Quarter and Smithfield.

"This is an exciting initiative we're launching," Mayor Parker said at the Birmingham Wheels Park site. "The MDC includes five sites across the city, including this one which will be the home of Birmingham City FC's new stadium. The MDC in total will attract around £11 billion pounds of investment; create 50,000 new jobs and 20,000 new homes. It's a really ambitious project that's going to change the lives and create opportunities for tens of thousands of people across Birmingham."

Timeline for the Stadium

Asked if he was confident that the stadium could be ready for the 2031/32 season, Mayor Parker said: "We're really working closely with the owners of the football club and their team. They're developing their plans, we're developing our plans – investing in the public realm and the transport network, including the Metro. I'm really keen to ensure that we work to the same planning schedule and we'll meet the ambitious targets the football club has set."

The Sports Quarter is one of a number of projects set to transform East Birmingham, with the MDC playing a key role in driving forward regeneration.
