Starmer Confirms £150 Warm Home Discount for 3 Million More

The Warm Home Discount scheme has been extended by the Government, providing a one-off £150 discount on energy bills for around three million extra households. The support now covers everyone receiving Universal Credit, whereas previously only some claimants were eligible.

Scheme Expanded to More Households

The discount will also apply to some of the poorest pensioners and those on other benefits such as Housing Benefit and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). The extension comes despite Sir Keir Starmer stepping down as Prime Minister, with the support confirmed for later this year.

Energy suppliers typically apply the discount between November and January, covering the busy Christmas period and coldest weather. The support is given as energy credit or a top-up voucher, depending on how customers pay their bills.

Timing Amid Rising Energy Costs

The announcement comes as households face increased pressure from energy bills, which have risen by £221 a year on average from July 1. The extended Warm Home Discount aims to alleviate some of this burden for vulnerable families.

Speaking in the Commons last week, Starmer said: "Thanks to this Chancellor we've delivered the fastest falling NHS waiting lists in 17 years, the money for new rights for renters and working people. And we're lifting half a million children out of poverty."

Starmer's Farewell Address

He added: "The test for any Prime Minister is handing over the country in better shape than you found it. I know I can do that." Starmer concluded: "Because of our decisions, my decisions, the country is moving in the right direction in a stronger and a fairer Britain. Ending austerity, investing in our public services, the fastest falling NHS waiting lists for 17 years, more rights for workers, more rights for renters, standing with Ukraine, Britain's reputation restored and half a million children being lifted out of poverty."
