The future of Woodlands Care Home, the deteriorating condition of our local road network, and the prospects for Accrington Victoria Hospital have all featured prominently on the extensive list of matters residents have urgently raised with me. I am dedicating significant effort to address each of these vital community priorities.
Regarding national leadership, I continue to offer my support to the Prime Minister. As one perceptive resident recently remarked, we should avoid treating our political leaders like Premier League football managers, hastily replacing them during every difficult period. Our nation derives considerable benefit from stability and from individuals diligently focusing on the tasks before them. That is precisely the approach I am committed to maintaining for our area.

In Parliament this month, I spearheaded a crucial debate concerning the devastating impact of armed conflict on children globally. The harsh reality is profoundly disturbing. Worldwide, countless children are enduring the horrors of war, losing their homes, their educational opportunities, and their fundamental sense of security. In some regions, children navigate past rubble simply to find sustenance; in others, they live under the perpetual threat of unexploded ordnance.
The United Kingdom played a pivotal role in shaping the international framework designed to safeguard children through the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. These protections are absolutely essential, and the UK must continue to champion them vigorously. During the debate, I emphasized practical, actionable measures that create tangible differences: clearing lethal landmines to restore safe play areas, supporting the reconstruction of schools and hospitals to reestablish normality, and providing substantive aid to survivors of violence. It fundamentally concerns acknowledging the inherent value of every child's life and exercising our global influence with profound responsibility.
Scrutinizing the Railways Bill for Local Benefit
Back in Westminster, I have been actively engaged on the committee meticulously scrutinizing the Railways Bill, legislation that will establish Great British Railways. For towns like ours across Hyndburn, this is of paramount importance. The railway network was historically integral to Accrington's growth and development. This bill promises stronger accountability mechanisms, enhanced passenger standards, and more reliable services, all of which would significantly improve daily life for commuters and families throughout the constituency.
When I travel between Oswaldtwistle and London, I personally encounter the same frustrating delays and overcrowding that many of you experience. After decades of chronic underinvestment, it is deeply disheartening to witness the subpar services and inadequate facilities both on our trains and at our stations in East Lancashire—with Accrington station being a rare local exception having seen redevelopment in recent years. Transformative change is long overdue, and this legislation represents a vital step forward.
Health and Local Economy Initiatives
I recently convened with Health Minister Ashley Dalton to discuss the government's new comprehensive Cancer Plan, which, for the very first time, incorporates a dedicated focus on children's cancer care. This development resonates strongly locally, inspired by figures like Lorraine Hargreaves, who founded the charity Milly's Smiles after the tragic loss of her daughter Milly to cancer. The charity provides indispensable practical essentials and ongoing support to families in hospital during their most terrifying moments. It is imperative that national health strategies authentically reflect the experiences of families right here in Hyndburn.
Within the constituency, I was delighted to visit Langtec in Altham, a distinguished Accrington-based business that exports its products globally while providing valuable employment for local residents. I fully recognize that our business sector continues to confront significant challenges; however, there are undeniably positive indicators within our local economy, including robust business survival rates and rising employment levels. This encouraging progress is a direct testament to the remarkable determination and resilience inherent in our community.
Personal Reflection and Tribute
As the Lenten period approaches, I have been engaging in personal reflection regarding service and perspective. The weeks preceding Easter offer many Christians a meaningful opportunity to pause, reassess, and refocus. Public life can often be overwhelmingly noisy. Lent serves as a poignant reminder to remain grounded, to maintain clear priorities, and to recall the foundational reasons for undertaking public service.
Finally, I wish to pay heartfelt tribute to Councillor Marlene Haworth, who passed away recently. She was an immensely dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly for local residents and commanded respect across the entire political spectrum. Her absence will be profoundly felt, and my sincerest thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and all who knew her.
