MP Sarah Coombes Speaks in Parliament on West Brom's Financial Charge

Labour MP Sarah Coombes has addressed the House of Commons, urging the Government to assist in resolving West Bromwich Albion's financial charge by the English Football League (EFL). Speaking on Thursday morning, she described the situation as "heartbreaking" for fans, particularly given the club's recent unbeaten run that keeps them above the relegation zone.

Concerns Over Potential Points Deduction

Miss Coombes highlighted that many supporters in her constituency are "very concerned" about reports of a potential points deduction due to allegations of breaching profit and sustainability regulations (PSR). The charge is believed to relate to historical loans taken during Guochuan Lai's tenure, which the club has strongly rejected.

She emphasized that a points deduction could lead to relegation, devastating fans, especially since the issue stems from loans under previous ownership. Miss Coombes asked the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, to agree on the urgency of resolving this matter quickly.

Government Response and Football Governance Act

In response, Ms Nandy thanked Miss Coombes for raising the issue, acknowledging the importance of football clubs to local communities, drawing parallels with her own experiences with Wigan Athletic. She reiterated the significance of the Football Governance Act, passed in 2025, which aims to protect the sustainability and integrity of English football.

The legislation was designed to safeguard clubs and ensure fair competition, with Ms Nandy stating that authorities would be closely examining West Brom's case. This act sets out clear guidelines to prevent such financial discrepancies and support clubs in maintaining competitive balance.

Details of the Financial Charge

West Brom are facing a hearing with the EFL over a financial charge related to breaching the PSR limit of £41.5 million between 2022 and 2025. The discrepancy is believed to center around a £5 million interest payment on loans taken from US lender MSD Holdings in 2022 and 2023.

It is important to note that Shilen Patel's Bilkul takeover was only completed in February 2024, indicating that the financial issues predate the current ownership. This adds complexity to the case, as the club argues that the charges should not impact their current standing under new management.

The outcome of this hearing could have significant implications for West Brom's season, with fans anxiously awaiting a resolution to avoid further sanctions.
