A Birmingham Chinese takeaway has blamed a zero food hygiene rating on a 'significant language barrier' after inspectors visited before opening time. Sea Garden in Perry Barr received the lowest possible rating from Food Standards Agency inspectors on March 25. The takeaway said English-speaking staff had not yet arrived when inspectors visited at 4.30pm, half an hour before opening.
Inspection Issues
The restaurant claims the inspection 'led to considerable misunderstandings' as no English-speaking staff were available at the time. Sea Garden has responded by saying it has 'taken immediate and comprehensive action to address the issues identified'. The premises has undergone a thorough deep clean and implemented additional cleaning schedules.
Improvements Made
'Staff members have received further training and guidance on food safety, cleaning procedures, and correct food handling practices,' the takeaway stated on the Food Standards Agency website. The business has also strengthened its food safety management system to ensure procedures are clearly documented. Regular checks are now carried out by management to ensure compliance with food hygiene regulations.
Sea Garden maintains the rating 'does not accurately reflect the true quality of our service' and has requested a revisit inspection to assess improvements.
