Royal Mail Launches 24/7 Parcel Locker Trial at UK Post Offices
Royal Mail begins 24/7 parcel locker trial at Post Offices

Royal Mail has unveiled a significant new initiative designed to transform parcel services for millions of UK residents. The postal giant is launching a six-month trial that will see 24/7 parcel lockers installed outside selected Post Office branches across the country.

Convenience Around the Clock

The core of the new scheme is to provide customers with greater flexibility. The lockers will be accessible at all hours, allowing people to drop off or collect parcels even when the Post Office branch itself is closed. This move directly addresses the growing demand for more convenient ways to send and receive items, driven by the relentless rise in online shopping and the popularity of second-hand marketplaces.

Anna Malley, Director of Partnerships and Acquisitions at Royal Mail, emphasised the importance of the partnership, stating: "Post Office is one of Royal Mail’s most important partners, and this is an exciting step forward in how we work together." She added that the trial reflects the company's commitment to meeting a diverse range of customer needs while maintaining existing service options.

Building on a Historic Partnership

This trial marks the latest innovation in a partnership that spans an incredible 370 years. Neill O’Sullivan, Mails and Parcels Director at Post Office, expressed delight at the continued evolution of their joint services. "We continue to innovate and ensure parcel services meet the needs of customers who want the flexibility of using a locker," he said. The trial's impact on postmasters will be a key part of the evaluation over the coming months.

This Post Office trial follows another major partnership announced just nine months ago. In a landmark deal, Royal Mail joined forces with Sainsbury's, making it the first supermarket chain to host Royal Mail's expanding network of parcel drop-off and collection points.

A Rapidly Expanding Network

Royal Mail first launched its dedicated parcel locker network in December 2024 to cater to surging demand. The strategy is to create a dense network of accessible locations, making sending and receiving parcels as effortless as possible. Commenting on the Sainsbury's partnership earlier last year, Jack Clarkson, Group Strategy and Transformation Director at Royal Mail, highlighted the necessity of the expansion. "Due to the relentless growth in online shopping... there is increased demand from our customers for more parcel drop off and collection points," he explained.

The six-month trial with Post Office represents a crucial next step in this national rollout. If successful, it could lead to a permanent, widespread installation of 24/7 lockers, fundamentally changing how UK households manage their parcel deliveries and returns.
