Royal Mail has issued a stark warning that 28 postcodes across the United Kingdom are experiencing major delivery delays, dealing a significant blow to households relying on timely postal services. This announcement marks another setback in the postal network's operations, following recent criticisms over service quality and price hikes.
Details of the Delivery Disruptions
In an official update, Royal Mail explained that while they aim to deliver to all addresses six days a week, temporary issues at a small number of local offices are hindering this goal. The company cited factors such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing problems, and other local challenges as the primary causes.
"We will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers," stated Royal Mail. "We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive."
The postal service apologised for any inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their understanding during this period of disruption.
Context of Recent Criticisms
This delay comes just days after Royal Mail faced backlash for announcing another increase in stamp prices, set to take effect from April 7. First-class stamps will rise by 10p to £1.80, while second-class stamps will increase by 4p to 91p.
Citizens Advice has described Royal Mail's service as "failing," highlighting concerns over declining reliability amidst rising costs. Richard Travers, Managing Director of Letters at Royal Mail, defended the price hikes, attributing them to the continued rise in delivery expenses and a dramatic drop in letter volumes.
"There are 70% fewer letters sent than 20 years ago," Travers noted. "In the meantime, the number of addresses we deliver to has increased by 4 million to 32 million across the UK."
