Wolverhampton Wanderers' long-term transfer target Yuri Alberto has surprisingly namedropped rivals Aston Villa in a recent interview, expressing particular admiration for striker Ollie Watkins.
Brazilian striker eyes European return
The Corinthians forward, who has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season, has been clear about his ambitions to return to European football. The 24-year-old Brazilian previously played for Zenit Saint Petersburg and is now eager for another chance on the continent.
"My biggest dream is to return to Europe and, God willing, play in the Champions League," Alberto told AS. When questioned about his preferred leagues, he demonstrated his broad football knowledge by stating: "I like them all, I follow them all. The Italian one, the English one, and even the German one. I think the Spanish one is very interesting. Very good."
Watkins comparison and Villa style admiration
Perhaps most intriguing for Premier League fans was Alberto's specific praise for Aston Villa and their attacking style. When asked which players he models his game on, the Brazilian offered an interesting response.
"When I played in the Santos academy, people said I had a style similar to Luis Suarez. Now I'm not sure," he reflected, before turning his attention to current Premier League talent.
"I like Ollie Watkins a lot, from Aston Villa. He's a true centre-forward. I like his style. Aston Villa's style is also very transitional and he is very fast, attacks space well and finishes very well. I really like their style."
Wolves' persistent interest in Alberto
Wolves' pursuit of the Brazilian striker is well-documented, with the club having lodged a €15 million (£13m) bid in January 2024 that Corinthians rejected. The Midlands club had proposed a loan deal with a fixed purchase price, but the Brazilian club weren't interested in negotiations.
Despite Alberto being under contract until 2030, Wolves have maintained their interest and are reportedly still monitoring his situation according to recent reports. Former manager Vitor Pereira was said to be a particular admirer of the striker's talents.
With Aston Villa consistently challenging for European football and Alberto's clear admiration for their playing style and star striker, this development adds an intriguing twist to the transfer saga that has primarily involved Wolves until now.
