Households across the UK receiving Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits are being alerted to important changes to their payment schedules this December. With three bank holidays falling over the festive period, the dates money arrives in accounts will be different for many claimants.
Why Are Benefit Payment Dates Changing?
The DWP does not process or send payments on bank holidays. This standard procedure means that when a claimant's usual payment date falls on a public holiday, their funds are sent on the last working day before the holiday instead. This year, the Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day holidays directly impact the schedule.
It is crucial for individuals and families, particularly those on lower incomes, to be aware of these adjustments. Knowing exactly when money will arrive allows for effective budgeting during what is often the most expensive time of the year.
Revised Payment Schedule for December and January
The specific changes confirmed by the DWP are as follows:
- If your normal payment date is Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day), you will receive your money on Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve).
- If your normal payment date is Friday, December 26 (Boxing Day), you will also be paid on Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve).
- If your normal payment date is Thursday, January 1 (New Year's Day), your payment will be made on Wednesday, December 31 (New Year's Eve).
Given that both Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall on a Thursday this year, some claimants could see two of their payments affected by the altered timetable.
Who Needs to Take Action?
Only those whose usual payment dates coincide with the bank holidays listed above will see a change. Claimants with payment dates outside of December 25, 26, and January 1 will receive their money as normal and do not need to take any action.
Benefits impacted include, but are not limited to, Universal Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and State Pension. The DWP advises all recipients to check their payment calendars and plan their festive spending accordingly to avoid any unexpected shortfalls.
Staying informed about these DWP payment date changes is a key step in managing finances through the busy Christmas and New Year period.
