A Heartfelt Connection Forged by Shared Experience
The most poignant moment of the night occurred when the Princess of Wales, stunning in a floor-length green velvet gown, shared a heartfelt embrace with Jessie J. Their conversation was deeply personal, centred on their shared experiences with cancer.
Jessie J, whose real name is Jessica Cornish, underwent a mastectomy for breast cancer in June this year. She later revealed she needed a second operation, forcing her to postpone her autumn tour.
Speaking about the encounter, the pop star explained, "Mum to mum, who has just recently gone through cancer, I just wanted to give her a hug." She added, "We acknowledged that it's something that is not easy to go through, especially in the public eye."
Jessie J also addressed her choice of an oversized black hoodie and trousers at the black-tie event, stating it was a deliberate representation of how one feels when depressed, wanting "the world to swallow you up."
Royal Engagements and Star-Studded Encounters
The royal couple's evening was filled with other significant interactions. Prince William discussed mental health with Jessie J, urging her to contribute to his charity work on the issue.
After the show, they met Tom Fletcher, the McFly vocalist behind the music for the new Paddington musical, with William praising the "fantastic" performance. The prince also greeted Paddington Bear himself, noting the marmalade sandwich in his paw.
The couple spoke with Sir Stephen Fry about his recent appearance on Celebrity Traitors, with Fry revealing that the prince and princess are fans of the show. The conversation included a light-hearted moment about a scene involving actress Celia Imrie.
The evening concluded with a special medley from Les Miserables to mark the musical's 40th anniversary, during which Prince William laughed at a quip made at his expense from the stage.
Earlier, Kate was presented with flowers by nine-year-old twins Emelia and Olivia Edwards, relatives of staff at Brinsworth House, a care facility supported by the Royal Variety Charity. She told the girls her own children were "very sad" not to be able to attend.
