Former McDonald's in West Bromwich Could Transform into 24/7 Casino and Tanning Salon
New plans have been unveiled to convert the empty former McDonald's restaurant on West Bromwich High Street into a 24/7 casino and tanning salon. The fast food outlet closed last year, leaving a vacant unit in the town centre.
Planning Application Submitted to Sandwell Council
High street gambling firm Shipley's has submitted a planning application to Sandwell Council, seeking permission to relocate its West Bromwich casino from Kings Square to the former McDonald's site at Duchess Parade on High Street. The proposal includes opening a casino operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Additionally, Tan Express would move into the first floor of the building, also operating 24 hours daily. The combined venture is part of a £600,000 refurbishment project expected to create 14 new jobs for the local community.
Statement from the Applicant
A statement included with the application asserts that the development aligns with key planning policies and represents sustainable growth. It highlights that the site is in a town centre location deemed appropriate for such uses, which could enhance the vitality and viability of commercial activities in the area.
The statement further emphasizes that the operator is a responsible and experienced licensed entity, committed to ensuring no unacceptable impacts on the amenity, health, or safety of the local community. It notes that measures will be in place to prevent noise, disturbance, anti-social behaviour, or similar issues, even with 24/7 operations.
The applicant claims the proposal will contribute positively to the safety and security of the location, providing long-term investment and preventing a vacant unit on the high street.
Background and Context
The former McDonald's restaurant has been vacant since its closure last year, prompting interest in redevelopment opportunities. This proposal comes amid ongoing discussions about town centre regeneration and commercial use in Sandwell.
If approved, the project would mark a significant change for the High Street, introducing new entertainment and service options while addressing vacancy concerns. The council's decision on the planning application is awaited, with potential implications for local employment and business dynamics.
