Walsall's Rooftop Food Court Submits Planning Application After Closure
Walsall Rooftop Food Court Submits Planning Application

Popular Rooftop Venue Forced to Close

A popular rooftop street food court in Walsall, which was suddenly shut down by the local authority, has now submitted a formal planning application. The Rooftop Food Court, located on top of the Asda multi-storey car park on George Street, was issued a temporary stop notice by Walsall Council in October. The council stated the operations posed an 'immediate risk' to public safety.

Retrospective Plans Reveal Site Issues

The venue, which opened earlier this year, quickly became a hit, offering food from more than a dozen vendors, an outdoor cinema, and seating for 350 people. However, the newly submitted retrospective planning application acknowledges that the site had been experiencing significant problems. These included vandalism, graffiti, rough sleepers, and drug paraphernalia.

Despite these issues, the applicant, Easy Park, argues that it transformed an underused rooftop into a vibrant and safe leisure space that supports Walsall's evening economy. The development includes 16 modular food units, a courtyard with seating, a silent cinema, soft lighting, and planters. Operating hours are proposed from 5 pm to 11 pm.

Jobs and Conservation Concerns

Easy Park has emphasised the venue's positive economic impact, stating it has created over 100 jobs across vendors, cleaning, and security staff. The site lies within the Church Hill Conservation Area, but the applicant contends that the car park's utilitarian design means the food court does not negatively impact the protected zone.

Walsall Council is expected to make a final decision on the planning application in January 2026, which will determine the future of this controversial but popular local attraction.
