Streeting: Starmer Has No Plan and Doesn't Understand UK

Sir Keir Starmer does not understand the country and lacks a plan, according to potential leadership challenger Wes Streeting. The former health secretary made the remarks as Labour faces an internal crisis following poor election results.

Streeting's Criticism

Speaking on the News Agents podcast, Mr Streeting said: "It's not just that the voters don't understand the Prime Minister and don't connect with him. I think the same is true the other way around. I don't think he understands where the country is, why people are feeling the way they do and he certainly doesn't have a plan."

Mr Streeting quit the cabinet last month to mount his own leadership bid. He described Labour's situation as an "existential crisis" and accused the Prime Minister of being in denial.

Burnham's Return

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, hopes to return to Parliament by winning the Makerfield by-election on June 18. He has confirmed he would join any contest to oust Sir Keir. Mr Streeting said he would serve under Mr Burnham but added: "I'd like Andy Burnham to serve in my government."

Leadership Dynamics

Mr Streeting acknowledged he is the underdog in any leadership race but said: "If I'm the best candidate, I'll win. If there's a better candidate, I can take it on the chin." He criticized cabinet members who publicly support Sir Keir while privately questioning his leadership, saying: "There's no point asking them that question, they're still in the cabinet."

The political turmoil comes as Labour struggles to connect with voters after a series of electoral setbacks. Mr Streeting's comments highlight deepening divisions within the party over its direction under Sir Keir's leadership.
