Aston Villa Face Tough Champions League and Premier League Schedule
Aston Villa Face Tough Champions League and Premier League Schedule

Aston Villa now have a clearer picture of how their Champions League commitments will intersect with the Premier League calendar next season, following the release of the domestic fixture list. The club secured its place in the Champions League league phase by finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, and also added the Europa League trophy to its collection.

Balancing European and Domestic Demands

Under manager Unai Emery, Villa demonstrated an ability to juggle European and domestic football simultaneously. However, during their first Champions League league phase campaign two seasons ago, the team struggled to maintain that balance. There is reason for optimism this time around, as the arrivals of Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio strengthened the squad. Villa performed strongly in league matches surrounding key knockout ties against Club Brugge and Paris Saint-Germain.

Champions League Fixture Details

Villa’s eight Champions League league phase fixtures will be confirmed after the draw on August 27. While opponents and the exact order of matches remain unknown, the alignment with the Premier League schedule is now clear. Notably, five of the eight league matches that follow Champions League fixtures will be away from home, leaving just three at Villa Park. Even more striking is a demanding stretch of four consecutive away games after European ties, against Manchester United, Ipswich Town, Coventry City and Fulham.

Key Match Sequences

Villa’s first Champions League match will come after their third league game of the season, against Hull City, and will be followed by a home clash with Nottingham Forest. Their second and third European fixtures are scheduled around a trip to Newcastle United on October 17. After the third Champions League match, Villa will host Manchester City before entering that challenging run of four straight away games. Finally, following their eighth and last Champions League league phase match, Villa will welcome newly promoted Ipswich Town to Villa Park on January 30.

According to the club, the schedule presents both challenges and opportunities, as Villa aim to build on last season's success.
