Birmingham City's Left-Back Crisis: Davies' Four Options

Birmingham City's Left-Back Crisis Deepens as Chris Davies Weighs Four Options

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies finds himself grappling with a persistent left-back dilemma that has plagued his tenure at the club. Over the past 20 months, Davies has rarely had two fit left-backs available simultaneously due to a relentless series of injuries.

The situation reached a critical point when Alex Cochrane powered through last season, playing nearly all of Blues' matches at left-back. This was necessitated by two separate injuries to Lee Buchanan – first a calf problem, then an ACL injury that has sidelined Buchanan for the past 14 months.

New Signing Falls Victim to Injury Curse

In January, Birmingham City appeared to have finally solved their left-back shortage by signing Kai Wagner from Philadelphia Union. However, in a cruel twist of fate, just hours after securing Wagner's transfer, Alex Cochrane suffered an ankle injury during a defeat to Watford. Davies confirmed Cochrane would be unavailable until April.

Wagner was immediately thrust into the starting lineup after just one training session and started 11 consecutive games before disaster struck again. During Wednesday night's match at Millwall, the German defender challenged for an aerial ball with Ryan Leonard and emerged with a shoulder injury. Wagner appeared to be in significant discomfort and was seen feeling his collarbone as he left the field.

Four Potential Solutions for Davies

Birmingham City will conduct tests on Wagner today to determine the extent of his injury, but the pressing question remains: how will they replace him if he cannot continue playing?

Lee Buchanan represents the natural replacement and has been included in Blues' EFL squad for the second half of the season. However, the 24-year-old defender hasn't played competitive football since 2024. Despite returning to full training recently, Davies has emphasized that Buchanan would need under-21 minutes before being considered for first-team selection.

"With Lee, it's about trying to string it together for a consistent period of time," Davies explained. "He's got to try and get a good few weeks under his belt and we've got to be really cautious with him. We have to give ourselves and him a lot of space to progress steadily."

Three Unconventional Alternatives

If Buchanan isn't ready to immediately replace Wagner, Davies has three unconventional options to address Birmingham City's left-back crisis:

  • Ethan Laird – The player who replaced Wagner at Millwall is capable of operating at left-back and has started games against Oxford, Leicester and Coventry in that position earlier this season.
  • Jonathan Panzo – The centre-back has been earmarked as an auxiliary solution by Davies for the left-back position.
  • Jack Robinson – Another centre-back option who played two games at left-back in December and has been identified as a potential stopgap solution.

Both Panzo and Robinson offer left-footed options if Davies prioritizes balance in his defensive setup. The manager now faces crucial decisions that could significantly impact Birmingham City's defensive stability in upcoming matches.
