Birmingham City's impressive 4-1 victory over Norwich City this weekend has been overshadowed by speculation surrounding the future of loanee Tommy Doyle.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly considering recalling the midfielder when the January transfer window opens, a move that pundit Don Goodman says does not surprise him.
Goodman's Verdict on the Doyle Situation
Speaking to Football League World, the former Sky Sports commentator expressed his lack of shock at the potential recall. Goodman highlighted Doyle's pivotal role in Sheffield United's promotion campaign during his last Championship spell.
"I am shocked he hasn't started more games for Birmingham City, really," Goodman admitted. "He's such a good technician, such a good footballer, and he'd be right up Chris Davies' street."
Despite this, Doyle has started the last five matches for The Blues, with the team winning three of those fixtures. His recent involvement, however, may not be enough to deter his parent club.
Wolves' Dire Straits Prompt Recall Consideration
The primary driver behind the potential recall is Wolves' precarious position. Sat bottom of the Premier League table after a 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace, new manager Rob Edwards is desperately seeking solutions.
Goodman believes Edwards, who remembers Doyle's quality from their shared time in the Championship, sees the 24-year-old as a potential lifeline. "Rob Edwards will be well aware of what Tommy Doyle can do, and let's have it right, Wolves need all the help they can get," Goodman stated.
What Losing Doyle Means for Birmingham
For Chris Davies' side, losing Doyle in January would be a significant blow. The Manchester City academy graduate provides crucial competition and depth in central midfield, qualities vital for a sustained promotion push.
Birmingham City have risen to 9th in the Championship table and are now just one point off the play-off places following their win against Norwich. The potential departure of a player of Doyle's calibre would force the club to urgently seek a replacement in the winter market.
The Blues are next in action against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Wednesday night, where Doyle will be hoping to continue his run in the starting lineup amid the growing speculation.
