Ian Holloway: Aston Villa 'wrong' to let Finley Munroe leave amid Championship interest
Holloway urges Villa to keep defender Munroe

Swindon Town manager Ian Holloway has publicly questioned Aston Villa's transfer strategy, branding the club 'wrong' for their apparent decision to allow young defender Finley Munroe to leave.

Championship Clubs Circle for In-Form Defender

The left-back, currently excelling on a season-long loan at Swindon in League Two, is the subject of serious interest from the Championship as the January window progresses. Clubs including Middlesbrough and Bristol City are understood to have made formal bids for the 20-year-old, with several other second-tier sides monitoring the situation closely.

Munroe's contract at Villa Park is set to expire in the summer of 2026, and he has not yet been offered fresh terms. This has paved the way for a likely permanent departure this month, a scenario that has stunned his current manager.

Holloway's Glowing Endorsement

Holloway, speaking on Monday, did not hold back in his praise for Munroe, even drawing a comparison with former Premier League star Seamus Coleman. "First off, I think Aston Villa are wrong, because they're not taking him. That's why this has all happened," Holloway stated.

"I would strongly shout to everybody that I don't think I've had as good a full-back potentially in my lifetime... I think Fin's in the same bracket, in my opinion," he added, highlighting the player's exceptional potential.

Munroe's statistics at Swindon underline his impact this season:

  • 23 starts in 24 league matches.
  • 2 goals and 7 assists from defence.

Uncertain Future for Swindon and Player

Holloway revealed a recall clause in the loan deal expires this Friday, adding urgency to the situation. He expressed a desire to keep Munroe but admitted Swindon cannot compete financially with Championship wages.

"He's a wonderful kid. I'd love to keep him. He'd like to stay, but he's out of contract in the summer, and we won't be able to afford his wages," Holloway conceded. "But if he's not here, he goes with my blessing. What a wonderful, wonderful player and person he is."

The ball now appears to be in Aston Villa's court. They must decide whether to heed Holloway's warning and secure Munroe's future, or allow one of their promising academy products to depart as a host of Championship clubs wait in the queue.
