Ally McCoist gives brutally honest verdict on Chris Davies' Birmingham City future
McCoist backs Davies for Birmingham City job

Ally McCoist has thrown his support behind Chris Davies, insisting the Birmingham City manager has done enough to warrant leading the club into what he describes as 'a big season'. The former Scotland striker turned pundit offered a brutally honest assessment of Blues' current standing.

Davies under pressure but results improve

Birmingham City are guaranteed a top-half finish in the Championship and have equalled their best points tally since the 2011/12 season. A run of three wins in their last four games has eased the pressure on Davies from supporters, and the Blues manager was serenaded at St Andrew's on Saturday after the final home game of the season.

Despite missing their brief of challenging for promotion, Davies and his players have made a strong case for continuity in recent weeks. The question mark over his future remains, but McCoist believes the manager has done enough to keep his job.

McCoist: 'Next year is a big season'

Speaking to talkSPORT BET Casino, McCoist said: 'Birmingham have huge ambitions, 100%. I don't know the owners, I don't know how they'll operate, but my thinking would be, next year is a big season. Get them ready for next year and see how it goes. That's where I would be with Birmingham. Chris Davies has done a great job.'

McCoist drew comparisons with Wrexham, another club with significant investment and high expectations. 'I think there's always a bit of a Wrexham factor,' he added. 'I know Wrexham are still going for the play-offs, of course, but there has to be a little bit of stability and an area where you can find yourself a little bit before you kick on again. That's where I think Wrexham are and I think Birmingham are in the same place, to be brutally honest, at this stage.'

He concluded: 'I thought this year would be the year where they just kind of levelled off a little bit, found a bit of stability, and then regroup and go again the following year. And I think Birmingham are the same.'
