Mikey Johnston's Impressive Stats Despite Injury-Ended Season
Mikey Johnston Impresses Despite Injury-Ended Season

Mikey Johnston's campaign with West Bromwich Albion was a tale of two halves. As the club slid down the table into relegation trouble, the former Celtic winger, signed two summers ago, was a rare shining light.

Memorable goals against Portsmouth and Preston came amid a host of top assists. He was instrumental in Albion's early-season form that propelled them into the top two. As things deteriorated under Ryan Mason and later Eric Ramsay, Johnston remained a beacon of positivity in an otherwise dreadful campaign.

His season came to an abrupt halt in James Morrison's first game as interim manager, as Albion slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Oxford United. Johnston was forced off injured in the first half, and a stress fracture of his ankle ended his campaign.

Despite missing the final eleven games, his statistics remain impressive compared to others in the division. Johnston still finished sixth in the Championship for assists, with nine in 34 outings, one of the best assists-to-games ratios. Stoke's Sorba Thomas led with 13, followed by Sheffield United's Gus Hamer. The next Albion player was way down the list, with midfielder Alex Mowatt on four assists, alongside striker Aune Heggebo.
