Sheffield United Target Ross Barkley in January Transfer Move
Sheffield United make move for Aston Villa's Ross Barkley

Sheffield United have reportedly made their move to sign experienced Aston Villa midfielder Ross Barkley during the January transfer window.

Blades Identify Villa Midfielder as Key Target

According to reports from Football Insider, Chris Wilder has identified the 32-year-old as a top priority for the Championship club. Wilder, who returned for a third spell as Blades boss earlier this season, is seeking players with Premier League pedigree to boost his side's promotion ambitions.

Barkley, who has made 61 appearances for Aston Villa across two spells, finds himself on the fringes of Unai Emery's squad this season. The former England international has managed just eight appearances in total this term, with a knee injury sustained in a 1-0 win over Wolves further limiting his involvement.

A Complex Deal with Multiple Hurdles

Any potential transfer is fraught with complications. Barkley's contract at Villa Park has just six months remaining, although the club holds an option to extend it by a further year. Furthermore, Villa boss Unai Emery revealed in late December that the player faced up to 12 weeks on the sidelines, meaning he may not be match-fit until late February.

This presents a significant gamble for Sheffield United, who would likely need to commit a substantial portion of their wage budget to secure Barkley, all while unsure of his immediate fitness. For Aston Villa, who missed out on a £35m deal for Conor Gallagher and are short in midfield, retaining Barkley as cover might be preferable unless they can secure a replacement.

Barkley's Recent Villa Career

The midfielder rejoined Villa from Luton Town in the summer of 2024, having impressed despite the Hatters' relegation. Last season, he made 29 first-team appearances, scoring four goals. A highlight was finding the net in a crucial 3-2 Champions League victory over RB Leipzig.

However, he has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot, beginning only three league matches throughout the entirety of the last campaign. His path to the first team has become even more blocked this season, prompting speculation about a January exit.

For the deal to materialise, several stars must align: Barkley's fitness must be assured, he must desire the move, the two clubs must agree on a wage contribution, and Villa will likely want a replacement midfielder secured first.
