Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly on the verge of winning the race to sign England international Conor Gallagher, beating Premier League rivals Aston Villa to a crucial January transfer.
Spurs Move Ahead in Gallagher Chase
According to reports from David Ornstein, Tottenham are closing in on a permanent deal for the midfielder, who currently plays for Atletico Madrid. The two clubs are said to be close to agreeing a fee in the region of £34.7 million (€40 million), with the player himself keen on a return to the Premier League and a move to North London.
Spurs entered the market for a new central midfielder following a serious injury to Rodrigo Bentancur, who is expected to be sidelined for several months with a hamstring problem. Gallagher has emerged as their preferred target to provide cover and competition.
Aston Villa's Interest and Injury Blow
Aston Villa had initially been leading the pursuit of the 25-year-old. Their need was heightened after Boubacar Kamara suffered an injury during their FA Cup victory over Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend.
However, Spurs' push for a permanent transfer, which aligns with the preference of Atletico Madrid and manager Diego Simeone, has seen them move ahead in negotiations. Tottenham had shown interest in Gallagher when Chelsea made him available in 2024, but he opted for a move to Spain instead.
Broader Implications for Tottenham's Squad
The anticipated arrival of Conor Gallagher could have significant knock-on effects for Ange Postecoglou's squad. It suggests the club may opt not to activate the buy-option in Joao Palhinha's loan deal from Bayern Munich, especially given Bentancur's recent contract extension.
Tottenham's midfield has been stretched thin recently, with injuries to key players. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have been on the treatment table, while Richarlison was also substituted with a muscle issue last Saturday. The potential signing of Gallagher would provide a much-needed boost.
For Aston Villa, manager Unai Emery remains hopeful of adding to his squad this month, having already completed the signing of Brian Madjo from FC Metz. Emery acknowledged the club is working on possibilities, stating they are alert to opportunities to improve the team.
