Tom Brady has criticized the frequency of manager firings in English football while reflecting on Birmingham City's challenging return to the Championship. The seven-time Super Bowl winner, a minority investor in the club, shared his thoughts during an appearance on The Overlap.
Brady on Birmingham's Season
Brady lamented the team's inability to sustain a consistent run of form in their first season back in the second tier. Despite a record-breaking League One title win under Chris Davies, Blues finished 10th in the Championship. Brady noted the high turnover of players and the difficulty of building momentum.
“Our first season was terrible,” Brady said. “We had four different manager changes. We hired a really good manager in Chris Davies in our second season when we were in League One - awesome season - and then the Championship is tough. We got to the Championship this year and had a lot of change in players. I think the quality of the player has been better, we just could never quite get on a run with the right momentum.”
Critique of Manager Firings
During the conversation with Gary Neville, Roy Keane, and Ian Wright, Brady questioned English football's tendency to sack managers. He pointed to Tottenham Hotspur's three coaches in a single season as an example.
“Why do you fire so many coaches all the time? Tottenham had three coaches. Why is everybody firing everybody?” Brady asked. “Don't they realise the players play? I'm sure if you have Leo Messi as one of your forwards you're not going to lose that much. All of a sudden we're like the coach is responsible for every bit of winning and losing, when to me the players on the pitch are incredibly important to winning.”
Brady's Role and Commitment
Brady, who did not attend any Blues matches in person last season due to his US commitments, remains a key advisor to the club's board. He praised Coventry City's impressive campaign and expressed his love for watching football. Pre-season for Birmingham City is set to begin as they aim for promotion next term.
