Tommy Doyle Confirms Birmingham City Exit After Loan Spell
Tommy Doyle Confirms Birmingham City Exit After Loan

Tommy Doyle has confirmed his departure from Birmingham City with a heartfelt message on social media, bringing an end to his season-long loan spell at St Andrew’s from local rivals Wolves.

Loan Performance and Role

The 24-year-old midfielder played 38 Championship matches for Blues, though only 19 of those were starts. His involvement dwindled in the final two months, making just one start as manager Chris Davies shifted to a more direct style, prioritizing mobility and physicality in midfield. This saw Jhon Solis, Paik Seung-ho, and Tomoki Iwata preferred in central roles.

Doyle did not score for Birmingham but contributed four assists and posed a threat from set pieces. His final appearance came as a 36-minute substitute in the 1-1 draw at Portsmouth.

Return to Wolves

Doyle now returns to Molineux, where he has two years remaining on his contract. He posted on social media: “Thank you @BCFC for everything this season. I’ve loved wearing the shirt & playing for you all. Wishing you all the best in the future.”

There is a possibility Doyle could face Birmingham next season, as Wolves have been relegated from the Premier League and could meet Blues in the Championship.

Permanent Move and Background

Doyle joined Wolves permanently in 2024 after a previous loan from Manchester City. That deal included a buy-back option and a reported 50% sell-on clause for City.

Speaking in December, Davies acknowledged that Doyle took time to adapt to Blues’ intensity off the ball and earn his trust. After a run of eight starts, Davies said: “He has become a really key player. He is one of those where his first thought is to go forward because he is technically so good and he is precise. He has that intent to play forward.”
