Tony Mowbray has laughed that the highlight of his day has been walking the dog as he looks forward to directing his energy back into football. The former Birmingham City boss, aged 62, has been re-appointed as manager at Blackburn Rovers, hoping to end a carousel in the Ewood Park dugout since he left the club in 2022.
Mowbray's Return to Management
Mowbray himself has ticked over jobs since then, with spells at Sunderland and West Brom as well as at St Andrew's, where his tenure ended prematurely due to health reasons. He has been out of football since a three-month spell at the Hawthorns ended in April 2025 and he has been itching to get back involved.
“Football burns away in me,” he said. “I can’t wait to get started and I’m looking forward to making new relationships and reinventing the old ones. I’m looking forward to meeting the players and I’m hoping they’re all full of energy and desperate to do well. I’m looking forward to it, I know the responsibility of being the head coach at a club like this and I am here to make people proud.”
Finishing the Job at Blackburn
He added: “It almost feels like I’m coming back to finish the job, because the aim of every team in the Championship is to try and get to the Premier League. I think you need the energy to do the job and my wife is so happy that this opportunity has come because I’ve been driving everybody mad in the house, I’m full of energy, but the highlight of my day has been going out and walking the dog!”
Mowbray previously spent five years as Blackburn manager, leading them to promotion to the Championship in 2018. His return comes after a period of instability at the club, with several managers taking the helm since his departure. Fans will hope his experience and passion can bring success back to Ewood Park.
