West Midlands Police have unveiled a massive security operation for one of English football's most intense local rivalries as Aston Villa prepare to host Birmingham City at Villa Park this weekend.

In an unprecedented move, police authorities have released their comprehensive ten-point plan designed to ensure public safety during Sunday's highly anticipated Championship clash. The operation represents one of the most extensive security deployments for a football match in the region this season.
Drone Surveillance and Pub Closures
Among the key measures announced, police confirmed they will deploy aerial drone units to monitor crowd movements and identify potential trouble spots around the stadium. Several pubs near Villa Park will face temporary closures or strict restrictions on match day to prevent alcohol-related incidents.
Chief Inspector Tim Robinson, who is leading the operation, stated: "We recognise the significance of this fixture to both sets of supporters, but our primary concern is everyone's safety. We have a robust policing plan in place to deal with any issues that may arise."
Staggered Arrivals and Dedicated Zones
The police strategy includes implementing staggered arrival times for away supporters and establishing designated fan zones to keep rival supporters separated. Enhanced search operations will be conducted at all entry points, with strict enforcement of prohibited items including pyrotechnics.
Transport and Traffic Measures
Commuters and residents should prepare for significant road closures around Witton and Aston areas from early morning until several hours after the final whistle. Additional public transport services will be provided, but fans are advised to allow extra travel time due to expected congestion.
The operation involves close coordination between West Midlands Police, both football clubs, Birmingham City Council, and transport authorities to create a seamless security framework.
Zero Tolerance Approach
Police have issued a stern warning to potential troublemakers, emphasising that any form of anti-social behaviour, pitch invasions, or discriminatory chanting will result in immediate arrest and potential football banning orders.
"We want genuine fans to enjoy this historic derby in a safe environment," Chief Inspector Robinson added. "The overwhelming majority of supporters behave impeccably, and we're determined to ensure they can watch their team without disruption."
Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 GMT on Sunday, with police operations commencing from 6:00 AM around the stadium perimeter.
